Annoucement
The new International Epilepsy Symposia Series
Recent developments including the formation of a new epilepsy
center for children and juveniles in Lyon (IDEE-Lyon), France, the stablishment of epilepsy centers in Marburg and Munich, Germany, and that Hans Lüders accepted the position of Director,
Epilepsy Center, University Hospitals Case Medical School in Cleveland led to the creation of a new series of epilepsy symposia and courses. The new series will be titled International
Epilepsy Colloquia and will be hosted in alternating years in Marburg/Munich, Lyon (F) and Cleveland (USA). The 2008 Symposium will be held in Marburg, Germany in June 22nd – 25th and the topic for the Symposium is “The Mesial Temporal
lobe Epilepsies”. Munich will sponsor the satellite 4th Munich
University Comprehensive Epilepsy Course in June 26th –
28th. The 2nd International Epilepsy Colloquium will be held in Lyon in May 2009 and will commemorate the opening of the IDEE. It will be dedicated to “Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery”. Finally, the 2010 Colloquium is scheduled to be held in Cleveland
in May covering “Higher Cognitive Functions in the Epilepsies”.
Both the Lyon and the Cleveland events will include didactic courses either sponsored by the Colloquium organizers
or directly sponsored by industry as satellite symposia.
The Marburg Symposium in June 22nd – 25th 2008
Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most frequent type of focal epilepsy
and is especially likely to become medication resistant. Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is one of the epilepsy syndromes best characterized by clinical and basic science research.
This symposium will cover all aspects of the mesial temporal lobe epilepsies including the influence of genetics, psychosocial
sequelae, novel imaging techniques and alternative surgical
strategies used. The extensive body of knowledge that has accumulated over the recent years will be made available to interested adult and pediatric epileptologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuropsychologists. Case discussions at the end of each session will directly relate the contents of plenary
lectures to the clinical practice.
Learning objectives
1. Recognise the clinical characteristics of mesial temporal
lobe epilepsy (MTLE)
2. Understand the underlying pathophysiology, the etiologies
and their influence on clinical course and management of
the mesial temporal lobe epilepsies.
3. Discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of different
diagnostic procedures (such as EEG, MEG, neuropsycho-
logical testing, structural and functional imaging) in the
mesial temporal lobe epilepsies.
4. Get acquainted with medical treatment, the different
surgical techniques and alternative therapies used in
patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
5. Understand what we have learned from basic research
and how it is related to the clinical practice of mesial
temporal lobe epilepsies.
We cordially invite you to participate in the meeting and hope to see you in June 2008.
