Classification Revision Recommendations
Dear Colleague,
Creating and maintaining the epilepsy and seizure classification system has represented a core activity of the ILAE for many years. It is a process that is ongoing and that requires periodic reexamination and updating to reflect our evolving understanding of the pathophysiology of epilepsy and the many syndromes. Under the leadership of Dr. Anne Berg, the Commission on Classification and Terminology has created a significant update to the system that had its last revision more than 20 years ago.
At this time, before submitting the revision for publication, we are asking for input from the League's membership. We would like for you to review the manuscript that the Commission has prepared and to offer your constructive thoughts and observations about the proposed changes and system. To obtain the manuscript, go to the League's website and visit the page about classification (http://www.ilae-epilepsy.org/Visitors/Centre/ctf/ctfoverview.cfm). Should you have comments or suggestions, please submit them to the League via the email address classification@liae.org. The comments will be posted with your name and chapter affiliation on a public comments section. We are making the comments public in order to stimulate ideas and a discussion.
The Commission has worked very hard over the last years to come to this point, and it is now time for the membership at large, the group that will be making use of this work, to participate in the final product.
We look forward to your comments. Because the Commission and the Executive Committee would like to finalize the manuscript in the next several months, it is important that we receive your comments by the end of the month.
Many thanks for your thoughtful comments,
Edward Bertram
